Nokia has announced a contract agreement with Malaysian internet service provider Extreme Broadband (EBB) and its subsidiary, Open DC. The partnership’s goal is to upgrade and enhance Open DC’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) data centers, focusing on improving security and network performance.
As part of the deal, Nokia will use its IP network solutions to connect six AI data centers across Malaysia, located in key hubs like Cyberjaya, Johor Bahru, Penang, and Kedah. The modernized network will use Nokia’s Data Center Fabric, Data Center Gateway, and quantum-safe network solutions to provide a more reliable, secure, and scalable infrastructure. This initiative aligns with Malaysia’s “MYDIGITAL” policy, a national strategy to accelerate the growth of its digital economy.
In addition to the contract, Nokia and EBB have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on future data center solutions, quantum-safe networks, and a joint go-to-market strategy for AI connectivity. This collaboration will also involve joint testing of new technologies and solutions.
Implications for Thailand
This partnership has broader implications for the Southeast Asian technology landscape, including Thailand, in several key ways:
- Regional Hub Competition: Malaysia, like Thailand, is vying to become a key digital hub in Southeast Asia. This major investment by Nokia in Malaysia’s data center infrastructure could intensify the competition for foreign investment in the region. However, it also signals a growing need for similar high-quality, secure data center solutions across the region, which could present opportunities for Nokia in neighboring countries.
- Technology Transfer and Best Practices: The deployment of Nokia’s advanced solutions, including quantum-safe networking and automation, sets a new benchmark for data center security and efficiency in the region. This could influence other countries, including Thailand, to adopt similar advanced technologies to future-proof their own digital infrastructure.
- AI and Cloud Readiness: The project’s focus on AI-driven data centers and multi-cloud connectivity addresses the increasing demand for high-performance computing. As AI and cloud services become more prevalent in Thailand’s economy, the country will need robust and secure data centers to support this growth. Nokia’s work in Malaysia demonstrates its capability in this area, potentially positioning the company for future projects in Thailand.
