This past week, Bangkok Patana’s Secondary School students were introduced to sustainable protein sources, organized by Amino Insecto, a student-led initiative. The seminar raised awareness about the environmental and nutritional benefits of insect consumption as a solution to challenges like climate change, deforestation, and protein deficiency.
The founder of Amino Insecto, Napa-ai (April) Suriyabhivadh shared her journey of discovering insect protein while training with the Thai National Basketball team. Initially hesitant to try an insect snack, she soon realized its potential as a sustainable, nutritious alternative. This experience inspired the creation of Amino Insecto, with the support of her peers, to promote the idea further.
The event featured guest speakers from Finland: Professor Sara-Maria Kauppi and Chef Topi Kairenius. Professor Kauppi presented her research on how thoughtful packaging design can encourage consumers to embrace edible insects. Chef Topi, a pioneer of insect-based cuisine, provided insights into the development of insect consumption in Europe and its cultural differences compared to Asia.
A highlight of the event was Chef Topi’s introduction of Finnish water bugs, which garnered enthusiastic responses from students. The accompanying food booth featured dishes like mango sticky rice with wood ants and caramelized locusts, with over 180 samples distributed to eager participants.
Bangkok Patana is the Independence Day Gala’s Gold sponsor and an active member of TFCC.
